| τέσσερας μὲν δὴ παρεξῆκε ἡμέρας, ἐλπίζων αἰεί σφεας ἀποδρήσεσθαι· | He let four days go by, hoping that they (the Greeks) would run away; |
| πέμπτῃ δέ, ὡς οὐκ ἀπαλλάσσοντο ἀλλά οἱ ἐφαίνοντο ἀναιδείῃ τε καὶ ἀβουλίῃ διαχρεώμενοι μένειν, πέμπει ἐπ᾽ αὐτοὺς Μήδους τε καὶ Κισσίους θυμωθείς, | But on the fifth day, since they (the Greeks) were not departing but seemed to him to be remaining out of persistent shamelessness and idiocy, he grew angry and sent the Medes and Kissians against them, |
ὡς δ᾽ ἐσέπεσον φερόμενοι ἐς τοὺς Ἕλληνας οἱ Μῆδοι, | having ordered them to take them (the Greeks) captive and lead them into his presence. But when the Medes rushed upon the Greeks and attacked them, |
| many were falling, but others came in afterwards, and they were not retreating although they suffered a great defeat. |
| And they were making it clear to everyone, and not least to the king himself, that on the one hand there were many men, but few men. And the battle lasted throughout the day. |
| ἐπείτε δὲ οἱ Μῆδοι τρηχέως περιείποντο, ἐνθαῦτα οὗτοι μὲν ὑπεξήισαν, οἱ δὲ Πέρσαι ἐκδεξάμενοι ἐπήισαν, | And since the Medes were being treated roughly, these men were withdrawing and the Persians took over and were attacking, |
| whom the king was calling the Immortals, of whom Hydarnes was commanding, on the grounds that of course these men at least would easily be successful. |
| ὡς δὲ καὶ οὗτοι συνέμισγον τοῖσι Ἕλλησι, οὐδὲν πλέον ἐφέροντο τῆς στρατιῆς τῆς Μηδικῆς ἀλλὰ τὰ αὐτά, | But when these men were also joining battle with the Greeks, they were achieving nothing more than the Median force, but rather the same results, |
| since they were fighting in a place with a narrow pass and they were using shorter spears than the Greeks and they were not able to use their (superior) numbers. |
