| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Abiotic | nonliving, and having no living origin |
| Autotroph | an organism such as a plant that can make its own food |
| Biodiversity | the immense variety of all living organisms—plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms—in a particular habitat or on Earth as a whole |
| Biomes | large areas with a similar climate and similar life-forms |
| Biosphere | all the environments on Earth that contain biotic factors (living things) |
| Biotic | living or having a living origin |
| Carnivore | a consumer of animals; a flesh eater |
| Carrying capacity | the maximum number of individuals of a particular species that an environment can support over a long period without damaging the habitat |
| Cellular respiration | process in cells by which oxygen is chemically combined with food molecules and energy is released in the form of ATP |
| Climax community | the final stage in the succession of communities |
| Commensalism | a relationship between organisms in which one organism benefits from the relationship, while the other neither benefits nor is harmed by the relationship |
| Community | all the populations of organisms that live in an area |
| Competition | in an ecosystem, it occurs when more than one individual or population tries to make use of the same limited resources |
| Conservation | the protection and wise use of natural resources |
| Consumer | an organism that depends on other organisms as food sources |
| Decomposer | a consumer that breaks down dead food sources into substances that enrich the soil |
| Ecosystem | a group of organisms and their physical environment |
| Endangered species | a species whose numbers have fallen so low that it is likely to become extinct in the near future |
| Energy pyramid | a diagram that shows how energy decreases at each feeding level in a food chain |
| Environment | the physical surroundings of an organism, including all the biotic and abiotic conditions and circumstances that affect its development |
| Extinction | the irreversible disappearance of a species |
| Food chain | a chainlike diagram that shows the relationship between various organisms and their sources of food energy |
| Food web | a weblike diagram that shows relationships between various organisms and their sources of food energy |
| Habitat | the environment where an organism lives, grows, and reproduces |
| Herbivore | a consumer of plants; a plant eater |
| Heterotroph | an organism that obtains the energy it needs by feeding on other organisms |
| Homeostasis | keeping conditions constant inside the body, as in keeping a steady body temperature |
| Limiting factors | environmental elements that stabilize population size and keep species from producing too many offspring |
| Multicellular | made up of many cells |
| Mutualism | a relationship between organisms in which all the organisms benefit from the relationship |
| Natural resources | all natural substances that humans can remove from the environment for their own use |
| Niche | an organism’s role in its community, including its behavior and its place in the food chain |
| Omnivore | an eater of both plants and animals |
| Organism | a living thing with organs or parts that work together |
| Parasitism | the relationship between two organisms in which one organism, called a parasite, lives to the detriment or harm of the other, called the host |
| Photosynthesis | the process by which green plants and plantlike organisms use energy from sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars that can be used for food |
| Pollution | contamination of the environment – air, land, and water |
| Population | a group of organisms of the same species living in the same area |
| Predator | a consumer that hunts or captures live animals as food sources |
| Prey | an animal that is hunted or captured and eaten by a predator |
| Producer | an organism that produces food for itself and others |
| Recycle | to reuse the remains of things |
| Scavenger | a consumer of dead food sources |
| Species | a group of organisms that area able to reproduce together and that resemble each other in appearance, behavior, and internal structure |
| Succession | the process in which a new group of organisms, which are better suited to the changes that have taken place in a particular area, replaces an old group of organisms |
| Symbiosis | a close, long-term relationship between two different species living together in an ecosystem |
| Unicellular | made up of one single cell |
