| On the one hand, these men had planned to act in this way; but on the other hand the Greeks at Thermopylae, when they Persians came near the pass, becoming afraid, were debating about retreating. |
| τοῖσι μέν νυν ἄλλοισι Πελοποννησίοισι ἐδόκεε ἐλθοῦσι ἐς Πελοπόννησον τὸν Ἰσθμὸν ἔχειν ἐν φυλακῇ· | It seemed good to the other Peloponnesians to go to the Peloponnese and to hold the Isthmus under guard; |
| Λεωνίδης δέ, Φωκέων καὶ Λοκρῶν περισπερχθέντων τῇ γνώμῃ ταύτῃ αὐτοῦ τε μένειν ἐψηφίζετο | But Leonidas, since the Phocians and Locrians were angered by this opinion, voted to remain there |
| And to send messengers to the cities asking them to help, since they were being (too) few to ward off the army of the Medes. |
| While they were planning these things, Xerxes was sending a mounted spy to see how many (of them) there were and what they were doing. |
| And when he was still in Thessaly, he had heard that a small army had been gathered there, and that both the Spartans and Leonidas, who was a descendant of Heracles, were the leaders. |
| ὡς δὲ προσήλασε ὁ ἱππεὺς πρὸς τὸ στρατόπεδον, ἐθηεῖτό τε καὶ κατώρα πᾶν μὲν οὒ τὸ στρατόπεδον· | And when the horseman rode towards the camp, he did not see and look down on the whole camp; |
| τοὺς γὰρ ἔσω τεταγμένους τοῦ τείχεος, τὸ ἀνορθώσαντες εἶχον ἐν φυλακῇ, οὐκ οἷά τε ἦν κατιδέσθαι· ὁ δὲ τοὺς ἔξω ἐμάνθανε, τοῖσι πρὸ τοῦ τείχεος τὰ ὅπλα ἔκειτο· | For he was not able to look down upon the men who were drawn up inside the wall, which they had rebuilt and were holding under guard. But he learnt about the men who were outside, whose weapons were lying in front of the wall; |
| And at this time the Spartans happened to be drawn up outside. He saw some of the men exercising, and others combing their hair. |
μαθὼν δὲ πάντα ἀτρεκέως ἀπήλαυνε ὀπίσω κατ᾽ ἡσυχίην· | Indeed, when he saw these things, he was amazed and learnt their numbers. And, learning everything accurately, he rode back undisturbed; |
| For nobody pursued him and he met no resistance; and, having gone away, he was of course telling Xerxes everything which he had seen. |
