scientific investigation a systematic, evidence-based approach to answering questions about the natural world using the
research Gathering existing information to understand what is already known about a topic before forming a hypothesis.
observation The foundational step of using the five senses or instruments to notice and record events, objects, or processes.
inference A logical, subjective interpretation or explanation derived from observations and prior knowledge.
hypothesis An "educated guess" or a tentative, testable, and falsifiable prediction about the relationship between variables.
experiment A controlled test designed to examine the validity of a hypothesis.
independent variable The factor in an experiment that is purposely changed or manipulated by the researcher to test its effects.
dependent variable The factor being measured or observed that changes in response to the independent variable.
controlled variable Factors that are kept constant throughout the experiment to ensure that only the independent variable affects the dependent variable.
control The standard of comparison, where the independent variable is not applied.
data Factual, recorded information (either qualitative or quantitative) obtained during an experiment.
conclusion A final determination based on data analysis that supports or refutes the original hypothesis.
analyze The process of organizing data into tables, graphs, or charts to identify patterns, correlations, or differences between groups.
scientific bias Prejudices or errors in design, data collection, or interpretation that can skew results and affect objectivity.
data trends Patterns or relationships found in the data (e.g., increasing, decreasing, or cyclical behavior).
