Struct & An. Brain

TermDefinition
Meninges A three layer protective covering of the brain
Medial Longitudinal Fissure Separating the two Cerebral hemispheres
Gyri Ridges of the brain
Sulci Shallow grooves
Cerebral Cortex Grey Matter (outer 2-4 mm of brain) the most highly evolved area of the brain
Frontal Lobe Intellectual functions: reasoning and abstract thinking, aggression, sexual behavior, olfaction, speech, and voluntary movement (precentral gyrus)
Parietal Lobe Body sensory awareness, taste, (postcentral gyrus), language, abstract reasoning, and body imaging
Temporal Lobe Formation of emotions (love, anger, aggression, compulsion, sexual behavior), interpretation of language and sound, major memory center
Occipital Lobe Receives, interprets, and discriminates visual stimuli from optic tract
Cerebellum Posterior to cerebrum and attached to brain stem, controlling equilibrium and motor coordination and muscle tone
Brain Stem Diencephalon (Forebrain), Midbrain, Hindbrain
Diencephalon (Forebrain) Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Epithalamus and Hypophysis
Thalamus Relay station, all sensory input must travel through here (except smell) before it reaches the cerebral cortex
Hypothalamus Involuntary body functions (tasting, smelling, resting, blood sugar levels, homeostasis), pituitary gland is located here
Midbrain Cerebral Aqueduct, Cerebral Peduncle
Cerebral Aqueduct Connects 3rd and 4th ventricles to supply cerebrospinal fluid form choroid plexus
Cerebral Peduncle Long descending tracts from the cerebral cortex to the pons and medulla
Hindbrain Pons, Medulla Oblongata
Pons Bridge between the fourth ventricle and cerebellum
Medulla Oblongata Attached to spinal cord, controls breathing, blood pressure, swallowing, and heart rate
Olfactory Bulbs Responsible for smell
Optic Chiasma & Optic Nerves Responsible for sight
Pituitary Gland The main endocrine gland, responsible for growth and production of milk in females
# of Cranial Nerves (all mammals possess) 12
Nervous tissue is made up of 2 types of cells: Supporting cells and neurons
Supporting Cells Neuroglia (many types of nerve cells that support, insulate and protect neurons), Astrocytes (form living barrier between capillaries & neurons), Microglia, Ependymal cells, Oligodendrocytes, Schwann cells, and Satellite cells
Neurons (Nerve cells) Specialized to transmit messages (nerve impulses) from one part of the body to another. Although different neurons have different structures, they all have common features
Cell body Contains the nucleus and is the metabolic center of the cell
Processes or fibers Extend from the cell body
Dendrites Neuron processes that conduct electrical currents toward the cell body
Axons Neuron processes that conduct electrical currents away from the cell body

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
