Broadcast and Film Terms and Definitions

Accuracy Being or staying correct and precise on something
Anonymous sources Individual(s) that give info but want to keep there identities a secret for personal or other reasons
Attribution Finding the source, cause, or creator of anything they made or invented
Bias Having prejudice against certain information
Conflict of interest Situation in which the concerns or aims of two different parties are incompatible
Deception Tricking or hiding some facts from the public
Disclosure Action of making new or secret information known for everyone to see
Ethics A set of moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity
Fabrication Creating and spreading a lie on something
Fake news Misleading information and verification of news on purpose for manipulation and harm
Libel False published statements that is damaging to a person's reputation
Morals A lesson, behavior and beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do derived from story, a piece of information, experiences
Muckraking The action of searching out and publicizing malicious information about famous people in an underhanded way
Objectivity The quality of being neutral
Off the record Not made as an official or attributable statement
Plagiarism The practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own
Press release Official statements issued to newspapers giving information on a particular matter
Retraction A withdrawal of a statement, accusation, or undertaking
Slander The action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation
Transparency The quality of being easy to perceive or detect dishonesty or the inaccuracy
Yellow Journalism Journalism that is based upon sensationalism and crude exaggeration upon factual information; popular around the 19th century
