Multicultural Competence in Special Education
| Term | Definition |

| Multicultural Education | Aims to change educational institutions and curricula so they will provide equal educational opportunities to students regardless of their gender, social class, ethnicity, race, disability, or other cultural identity |
| Subcultures | Subcultural is associated with or part of a larger culture" a culture that is not the entire culture of a nation or other entity. Sometimes called a "microculture" but a subculture is not a necessarily small or a minority of a larger group |
| Sheltered-english approach | A method in which language-minority students are taught all their subjects in English at a level that is modified according to the individuals needs |
| Exceptionality group | People who share a collection of specific abilities or disabilities |
| Equity | the idea of being equal in not getting the same thing but being equal that each kids gets their needs met |
| Diversity | the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc. |
| Inclusion | the idea of placing students with a disability in gen ed classes or other school activities. |
| Justice | goes beyond legal compliance (rights) to actively disrupt systemic, ableist barriers that exclude students with disabilities |
