| Exponential Growth | Population growth that is continuous because of the abundance of resources for an ever increasing population |
| Developed Country | A modern industrialized country in which people are generally better educated healthier and live longer than people in developing countries |
| Population | A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area |
| Tragedy of the Commons | A parable which illustrates the tendency of a shared limited resource to become depleted because people act from self interest for short term gain negatively affecting the larger population |
| Biodiversity | All the variety of life found in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem at any given time |
| Environmental Science | An interdisciplinary academic field that draws on ecology geology meteorology biology chemistry engineering and physics to study environmental problems and human impacts on the environment |
| Mortality Rate | The number of deaths in relation to the population over a given time |
| Ecological Footprint | The impact of a person or community on the environment expressed as the amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources |
| Medical Revolution | The time in human history where medical technology invented in Europe and North America was diffused to poorer countries Improved medical practices eliminated many traditional causes of death |
| Fertility Rate | The average number of children born to a woman in each population during her lifetime |
| Hunter Gatherer | Nomadic groups whose food supply depends on hunting animals and collecting plant foods |
| Agricultural Revolution | The time when human beings first domesticated plants and animals and no longer relied entirely on hunting and gathering |
| Industrial Revolution | A period of rapid growth in the use of machines in manufacturing and production that began in the mid 1700s |
| Infrastructure | The fundamental facilities and systems serving a country city or area such as transportation communication systems power plants and schools |
| Developing Country | A country that has low industrial production and little modern technology |
| Sustainability | The ability to keep in existence or maintain A sustainable ecosystem is one that can be maintained at levels that will continually support those that depend on it |
| Urbanization | The process by which large numbers of people become permanently concentrated in relatively small areas forming cities |
