TermDefinition
Neurons The fundamental nerve cell that sends signals throughout the body.
Dendrites Branching receivers of signals from other neurons, bringing them to the cell body.
Nucleus The cells control center. It contains a cells genetic information (DNA)
Axon The long projection that transmits electrical impulses away from the cell body.
Axon Terminals The ends of the axon that release neurotransmitters.
Synaptic Gap (Synapse) The tiny space where neurotransmitters cross to connect neurons.
Neurotransmitters Chemical messengers that carry signals across the synapse.
Acetylcholine Too little is associated with Alzheimer's disease
Dopamine Too little is related to Parkinson’s diseases, while too much is related to schizophrenia.
Norepinephrine and Serotonin Too little is related to Depression.
GABA Too much impairs learning and motivation, while too little can cause anxiety and seizures.
Frontal Lobe Voluntary movements, planning and decision making, emotional control, fluency of speech (Broca's area), working memory
Parietal Lobe Warmth, cold, touch, pain (in the somatosensory cortex
Temporal Lobe Hearing, comprehension and production of meaningful speech (Wernicke's area)
Occipital Lobe Sight
Limbic System Basic emotional responses, learning and forming new memories
For right-handed people, list the mental processes usually associated with the left hemisphere of the brain. Language, Logic & Analysis, Math, and Motor Control.
For right-handed people, list the mental processes usually associated with the right hemisphere of the brain. Creativity, Art, Spatial Awareness, Emotion, Intuition, and the Big Picture.
List at least five psychological traits or disorders associated with heredity. Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and Anxiety/Panic Disorder.
