Evolution Vocab

TermDefinition
Adaptation A physical or behavioral trait in an organism. The adaptation improves the organism's ability to survive and may be passed to the next generation
Instinct The natural reactions that animals have without being taught them
Mimicry Copying other animals' traits such as color, noise, or movements
Natural Selection An ongoing process in which organisms that are better suited to their environment survive and produce more offspring
Mutation A change that occurs in the DNA, either from a mistake as the DNA is copied or because of environmental factors
Extinction The state or process in which a species or large group of organisms ceases to exist
Fossils The preserved remains of an animal, plant, or other organism from a prehistoric or other geologic time
Fossil Records A collection of all the fossils that have been found in the world with dates and locations
Evolution An accepted theory of how species have developed and changed in an ongoing process from ancient times. Evolution is central to the study of biology
Competition Organisms compete with each other over resources like food, habitats, etc.
Variation Individuals in a species that have different traits from one another
Predator An animal that is hunting for things to eat
Prey An animal that is being hunted
Symbiosis The relationships between animals of different species
Parasitism The relationship between animals where one is being hurt or killed and the other is benefiting
Mutualism The relationship where both animals are being benefited
Commensalism The relationship where one animal is benefitting and the other is not affected
Herbivore An animal that has a diet that is strictly of plants
Carnivore An animal that has a diet that is strictly meat
Omnivore An animal that eats meat and plants
