area the amount of space inside a shape (measured in square units)
balanced budget when income equals total expenses
brackets [ ] grouping symbols used like parentheses
budget a plan for how to use money
circle a round shape with no sides or vertices; all points are the same distance from the center
combined put together; total amount after adding
common denominator a shared denominator used to add/subtract fractions
coordinate grid/plane a grid used to graph points using x- and y-values
decimal a number with a decimal point (ex: 24.2)
denominator the bottom number in a fraction (how many equal parts in the whole)
difference the answer to a subtraction problem
equation a math sentence with an equals sign (=)
equivalent means “equal in value” (same amount, written a different way)
equivalent fractions fractions that name the same value (ex: 1/2 = 2/4)
expense money you spend
expanded form writing a number as the sum of its place values (showing each part added)
expanded notation writing a number showing each place value added together
expression math numbers/symbols without an equals sign (ex: 28 + 7 × 8)
factor a number being multiplied (in 7 × 8, 7 and 8 are factors)
fraction a number that shows part of a whole or part of a group
hexagon a polygon with 6 sides
horizontal left to right
hundredth 2 places to the right of the decimal (0.01)
improper fraction a fraction with a numerator larger than the denominator (ex: 9/4)
income money you receive/earn
input the number you start with in an input-output table
leaf the right part of numbers in a stem-and-leaf plot (often ones)
mixed number a whole number and a fraction together (ex: 4 3/8)
multiple a number you get by multiplying (multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18…)
numerator the top number in a fraction (how many parts)
ordered pair two numbers written (x, y) that name a point on a graph
order of operations the rule for what to do first: brackets/parentheses, then multiply/divide, then add/subtract
origin the point (0, 0) where the x-axis and y-axis cross
parallel lines lines that never meet and stay the same distance apart
parallelogram a quadrilateral with 2 pairs of parallel sides
parentheses ( ) grouping symbols that tell what to do first
pentagon a polygon with 5 sides
perimeter the distance around a shape
place value the value of a digit based on its position in a number
polygon a closed shape made of straight line segments
product the answer to a multiplication problem
quotient the answer to a division problem
quadrilateral a polygon with 4 sides
rectangle a quadrilateral with 4 right angles
remainder the amount left over after division when it doesn’t divide evenly
rhombus a parallelogram with 4 equal sides
right angle an angle that measures 90°
round to find a close estimate (ex: to the nearest tenth)
scatterplot a graph that shows data as points to look for patterns
simplified written in the simplest form (after doing operations or reducing)
square a quadrilateral with 4 equal sides and 4 right angles
square units units used to measure area (square inches, square feet, etc.)
standard form writing a number the usual way using digits (ex: 257.684)
stem the left part of numbers in a stem-and-leaf plot (often tens)
stem-and-leaf plot a display that splits numbers into a “stem” and a “leaf” (ex: 3|2 = 32)
sum the answer to an addition problem
tally marks marks used to count and record frequency
tenth 1 place to the right of the decimal (0.1)
thousandth 3 places to the right of the decimal (0.001)
trapezoid a quadrilateral with at least 1 pair of parallel sides
triangle a polygon with 3 sides
unit fraction a fraction with 1 as the numerator (ex: 1/6)
value of an expression the answer after you calculate an expression
variable a letter or symbol that stands for an unknown number
vertical up and down
word form writing a number using words
x-axis the horizontal number line on a coordinate plane
x-coordinate the first number in an ordered pair; shows horizontal position
y-axis the vertical number line on a coordinate plane
y-coordinate the second number in an ordered pair; shows vertical position
