TermDefinition
dot plot A graph that uses dots to show how many times each data value occurs.
data Information (usually numbers) collected to answer a question.
data value One number in a set of data.
frequency How many times a value occurs.
frequency table A table that shows how often data values (or ranges) occur.
tally marks Counting marks used to record frequency in groups of five.
represent To stand for or show (example: each dot represents 1 farmer).
stem The first digit(s) in a stem-and-leaf plot (often the tens place).
leaf The last digit in a stem-and-leaf plot (often the ones place).
total The whole amount when you add everything together.
angle A figure formed by two rays that share an endpoint.
polygon A closed, flat shape made of straight line segments.
side A straight edge of a polygon.
parallel sides Sides that never meet and stay the same distance apart.
perpendicular sides Sides that meet to form a right angle (90°).
perimeter The distance around a shape (add all side lengths).
area The space inside a shape (measured in square units).
rectangle A quadrilateral with 4 right angles.
expanded notation A way to write a number as the sum of its place values (using addition and multiplication).
standard form The usual way to write a number using digits.
word form Writing a number using words.
tenths The place value for 0.1.
hundredths The place value for 0.01.
fraction A number that shows part of a whole or part of a set.
equivalent fractions Fractions that have the same value (example: 4/6 = 2/3).
numerator The top number in a fraction (counts parts).
denominator The bottom number in a fraction (total equal parts).
improper fraction A fraction with a numerator greater than the denominator (example: 5/4).
value How much something is worth or represents.
greater than (>) More than; larger.
less than (<) Less than; smaller.
equivalent Same value, even if written in a different way.
weight How heavy something is (measured with units like ounces and pounds).
expenses Money that is spent.
variable (expense) An expense that changes from month to month.
fixed (expense) An expense that stays the same each month.
dot plot A graph that uses dots above a number line to show how many times each value occurs.
lines of symmetry Lines that divide a figure into two matching (mirror) halves.
stem-and-leaf plot A data display that splits numbers into a stem (first digit[s]) and a leaf (last digit).
frequency table A table that shows how often each data value (or range) occurs.
have left The amount remaining after some is taken away (usually subtract).
expression Numbers and operation symbols without an equals sign.
mixed number A number with a whole number and a fraction (example: 3 1/2).
improper fraction A fraction with a numerator greater than or equal to the denominator (example: 5/4).
