Chapter 1 Terms

TermDefinition
Disability An inability to do something, a diminished ability to capacity to perform in a specific way
Handicap A disadvantage imposed on an individual
Prevalence The percentage of a population or number of individuals having a particular exceptionality
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) Low-incidence category, severe physical trauma
Special education Specially designed instruction that meets the unusual needs of an exceptional student and that requires special materials, teaching techniques, equipment, and/or facilities
Intellectual disabilities A condition with limitations in learning, problem-solving and reasoning
Emotional/behavioral disorders A condition in which its difficult to be practical, social, and have conceptual skills
Emotional disturbance A condition that affects a person's ability to learn, have relationships, and function in everyday life
Deinstitutionalization Breaking down barriers and help those with disabilities to participate in
Inclusion The action of including or being included within a group
Legislation Laws and litigation refers to lawsuits and court decisions
Education for All Handicapped Children Act Amended to become IDEA
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Ensures that all children and youths with disabilities have the right to a free, appropriate public education
Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) Ensures that all children and youths with disabilities have the right to a free, appropriate public education
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities that are like those provided to individuals on the basis of race, sex, national origin, and religion
Litigation Lawsuits or court decisions
Hydrocephalus An accumulation of fluid around the brain that can cause mental or physical disabilities if not corrected
