| place value | the value of a digit based on its position (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.) |
| digit | a number symbol (0–9) |
| value | what a number is worth |
| standard form | a number written normally (15,090) |
| expanded form | a number written as a sum of its place values (10,000 + 5,000 + 90) |
| sum | the answer to an addition problem |
| difference | the answer to a subtraction problem |
| product | the answer to a multiplication problem |
| quotient | the answer to a division problem |
| equal groups | groups with the same amount in each group |
| equation | a math sentence with an equals sign (=) |
| expression | numbers and operation symbols without an equals sign |
| equivalent | equal in value (same amount) |
| estimate | a close “about” answer that is reasonable |
| nearest | the closest ten/hundred (whichever the question asks) |
| rule | what you do to get from one number to another (like “times 6”) |
| fraction | a number that shows part of a whole |
| equal parts | parts that are the same size |
| rectangle | a 4-sided shape with 4 right angles |
| square | a rectangle with 4 equal sides |
| area | the space inside a shape (measured in square units) |
| perimeter | the distance around a shape (add all side lengths) |
| inch | a small unit of length (customary) |
| centimeter | a small unit of length (metric) |
| meter | a larger metric unit of length |
| hour | a unit of time equal to 60 minutes |
| minute | a unit of time; 60 minutes in 1 hour |
| bar graph | a graph that uses bars to show amounts |
| pictograph | a graph that uses pictures to show amounts |
| scale | the counting pattern on a graph (like by 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s) |
| total / in all | add to find the whole amount |
| remaining / left | subtract to find what’s still there |
| each | the same amount in every group (often multiplication/division) |
| dot plot | a graph that uses dots (X’s) above a number line to show frequency |
| combined/put together | joined into one total |
| quadrilateral | a polygon with 4 sides |
| least number | the smallest number in a set |
| greatest number | the largest number in a set |
| error | a mistake; something that is incorrect |
| prism | a solid figure with two matching (congruent) bases and flat faces |
| face | a flat surface of a solid figure |
| vertices | corner points where sides or edges meet |
| polygon | a closed shape made of straight line segments |
| credit | money added to an account (like a deposit) or an amount you earn/apply toward a total |
