| Term | Definition |

| Allusion | when writing mentions any historical person, place, thing, or text |
| Flashback | When the chronology of a story stops and a past event is relived |
| Foreshadow | Hints or clues about what will happen later in the story |
| Irony | (Situational) Irony when an outcome is dfferent from what would be expected under normal circumstances |
| Verbal Irony | A form of sarcam where what is said is not meant to be taken literally |
| Dramatic Irony | when a character or the audience knows more that another character |
| Repetition | To restate the same idea over and over in different ways |
| Metaphor | a COMPARISON that does NOT use "like" or "as". It states one thing IS another |
| Alliteration | Several nearby words that begin with the same CONSONANT sound |
| Imagery | When an author makes the reader use any of the 5 senses (touch, taste, sound, sight, smell) to identify with the text. |
| Juxtaposition | Two ideas placed next to each other for comparison |
| Oxymoron | Two WORDS that mean the opposite of one another placed next to each other for impact |
| Cacophony | Harsh unpleasant sounds |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that sound like the sound they make |
| Simile | A COMPARISON that uses "like" or "as" |
| Euphony | Pleasant sounds |
| Anaphora | To repeat the exact same word or phrase over and over |
| Personification | Giving a non living thing human ability |
| Hyperbole | A saying that has a small bit of truth and an exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally. |
| Assonance | When the same vowel sound is repeated in several nearby words (rhyme) |
| Symbolism | Words or pictures that represent another idea |
| Idiom | A commonly used expression that does not pertain to the subject matter and means something else entirely |
| Apostrophe | To address a person who is not physically present |
