Arguments and Claims

TermDefinition
argument a piece of writing or speech expressing and defending an opinion about a topic
claim a statement expressing a main idea of an argument
debatable something that can be proven or disproven
delineate to describe, trace, or outline
evidence facts, statistics, numerical data, quotations, specific examples, and expert opinions that support a claim
reasoning statements, questions, and appeals that explain why a reader should consider the evidence that is presented and accept the claim
Counterclaim A solid and reasonable argument that opposes or disagrees with a claim.
Refute To attempt to weaken an opposing view or make it less credible (believable)
