| argument | a piece of writing or speech expressing and defending an opinion about a topic |
| claim | a statement expressing a main idea of an argument |
| debatable | something that can be proven or disproven |
| delineate | to describe, trace, or outline |
| evidence | facts, statistics, numerical data, quotations, specific examples, and expert opinions that support a claim |
| reasoning | statements, questions, and appeals that explain why a reader should consider the evidence that is presented and accept the claim |
| Counterclaim | A solid and reasonable argument that opposes or disagrees with a claim. |
| Refute | To attempt to weaken an opposing view or make it less credible (believable) |
