How the Eye Works!!
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Lens | Focuses the light coming into the eye. (focuses it onto the back of the eyeball called the retina) |
| Pupil | The clear opening in the eye that lets light through. The black circle in the center of the eye. This is a covered opening- NOT a hole in the eye. |
| Optic Nerve | A short, thick nerve that takes signals from the rods and cones up to your brain. (It is at the back of the eyeball.) |
| Cornea | The protective covering over the whole eye. It keeps the eye from getting scratched. |
| Retina | Sensors located in the back of the eye that sense the light that reaches them. It then generates an electric signal which is sent to the brain through the optic nerve. A nerve layer that is made up of rods and cones and generates nerve signals. |
| Rods | A type of nerve in the retina that distinguishes black, white, and shades of gray. They detect shapes and help you see in dim light. |
| Cones | A type of nerve in the retina that detects red light, green light, and blue light. They only work in bright light. |
| Iris | A ring of muscles surrounding the pupil that contracts and expands to change the amount of light entering the eye. |
