What is behavioral Research

research shpes a theory by bringing it into accord with the observable world and thereby increaseing the theory's explantory and predictive power
theories go beyond a single observation and link a number of sometimes diverse observations into coherent wholes
theories and research are connected by means of hypotheses
hypotheses are testable propositions that are logically designed from theories
One type of applied research receiving increasing attention is program evaluation determining the effectiveness of a program
Instrumental research includes studies done as training exercises or as part of a job assignment
action research involves the potenial users of the information in doing the research; may develop a constituency for change
A multimethod approach is useful in dealing with the unforeseen circumstaces that arise in field research such as changing focus from customers to store clerks
Knowledge will be more thorough and accurate when it includes ideas and findings from may different sources
Studying complex social issues virtually requires multiple methods, not only for breadth of coverage, but also to allow for a check on the validity of individual methods
reactivity is the effect of the research upon the participants and the data collected
An operational definition defines something by how it is measured
