Matter & Energy in Ecosystems
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Energy | The ability to do work or cause change. |
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transformed from one form into another. |
| Law of Conservation of Matter | Matter cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transformed from one form into another. |
| Autotroph | Organisms that produce their own food. Also known as producers. |
| Heterotroph | Organisms that obtain energy by eating other organisms. Also known as consumers. |
| Photosynthesis | A chemical reaction during which plants convert radiant energy from the Sun to chemical energy; the reaction converts carbon dioxide and water into sugar (glucose) and oxygen. |
| Cellular Respiration | The process of obtaining energy from the breaking of chemical bonds in nutrients. |
| Theory | A well-tested and widely accepted explanation for natural phenomena. |
| Law | Statements, based on repeated experiments or observations, that describe or predict a range of natural phenomena. |
| Empirical Evidence | Information gathered from direct observation, experimentation, or experience. |
| Matter cycles | Continuous loops, moving between living organisms (producers, consumers, decomposers) and the nonliving environment (air, water, soil) through processes like photosynthesis, respiration, respiration and decomposition! |
