Practical Tips for Variations on Experimental Designs

TermDefinition
Remember that your research design and methods should be determined by your research question
Can a traditional experimental design be used to conduct your study or is a variation from the traditional design necessary.
recognize and evaluate main effects and interactions in factorial designs
Evaluating more than a three-way interaction effect can be quite difficult
Be wary of using complex factorial designs that result in numerous main effects and interactions
choose the levels of your independent variable with experimental control in mind
consider the temporal ordering of your variables (i.e., the hypothesized cause must precede the hypothesized effect)
consider designing a few discrete experiments that build on one another, rather than conducting a single large experiment with many factors
Ensure the internal validity of your design through random assignment of participants to your different experimental conditions
If you have a small sample size, quasi-random assignment to guarantee distribution of participants across key characteristics may be necessary.
Ensure that any control group in your design is equivalent to the intervention group on all possible dimensions other than the intervention itself
Assess whether your topic can be best examined through a between-group or within-group design
decisions should be based on both pragmatic considerations and what is likely to give you the most accurate results.
use strategies to control for confounds as part of the design or account for them in analyzing your results
Develop a plan to address ethical limitations and protect the rights of all of your participants.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
