Compounds A substance made of two or more different elements chemically bonded together
Solutions A mixture where one substance is dissolved evenly in another
Acids Substances that release hydrogen ions (H⁺) in water and have a pH less than 7
Bases Substances that release hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water and have a pH greater than 7
Salt A compound formed when an acid reacts with a base
pH A measure of how acidic or basic a solution is, ranging from 0 to 14
Hydroxide An ion made of oxygen and hydrogen (OH⁻) found in bases
Hydrogen ions Positively charged ions (H⁺) found in acids
Neutral A solution with a pH of 7, neither acidic nor basic
Acidic A solution with a pH less than 7
Basic A solution with a pH greater than 7
pH scale A scale from 0 to 14 that shows how acidic or basic a substance is
Indicator A substance that changes color to show if a solution is acidic or basic
Properties Characteristics used to describe matter, such as color, density, and pH
Water quality How clean and safe water is for living things and human use
Air quality How clean and safe the air is for breathing
Acidification The process of becoming more acidic, often in oceans or lakes
Carbon cycle The movement of carbon through the atmosphere, oceans, plants, animals, and soil.
Acid-Base Neutralization Reaction Acid + Base = Salt + Water
