TermDefinition
Midpoint The center value of a scale with an odd number of response possibilities. Example on a scale of agreement is "neither agree or disagree."
Anchor (or endpoint) A point or value that marks one end of a line segment or interval.
longer-scale formats reduce skew and provide a more normal distribution of scores
Providing clear examples of the endpoints, ones that are meaningful for your participants, can also be helpful
careful examination of the data, pilot testing, and sensitivity to group differences will help you be sensitive to different subject populations (especially those from different cultures)
Likert scale The sum of responses to multiple questions intended to measure the same variable using the Likert response format.
Evaluating Your Survey Obtain Feedback, Conduct Pilot Testing, Assess Instrument Reliability, Test-retest Reliability, Parallel-forms Reliability
Test-retest Reliability A measure of survey reliability that examines the consistency of responses of respondents who complete the same survey on two separate occasions.
Pilot study A “prestudy" conducted before your actual study to assess your survey/interview instrument or test a methodology.
Obtain Feedback experts look at if the questions measure what they are supposed to measure (external validity) and whether subsets of questions sensibly group together as coherent scales (internal validity)
the piloting process may involve conducting interviews and asking open-ended questions to develop the more tightly worded items
Parallel-forms (or alternate-forms) reliability A measure of survey reliability that examines the consistency of responses of respondents across two versions of a survey
participants may remember how they responded the first time, potentially leading to overestimates of reliability
Internal consistency extent that items intended to measure the same variable yield similar responses.
Split-half reliability: A measure of internal consistency assessed by dividing survey items intended to measure the same variable into two sets and examining how well responses to those two sets of items agree with one another
Cronbach's alpha A measure of the internal consistency of a set of scale items.
Subscales Distinct parts of a larger Instrument that measure different aspects of a variable
Use Factor Analysis for Advanced Scale Construction
Factor analysis: examines the relationships between items in a scale, useful for determining whether a scale measures a single or multiple variables

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
