Q3S1 - Properties
Grade 8 Q3S1 - What are the properties of matter?
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chemical changes | changes that create new substances with different properties from the original |
| Physical changes | changes that affect the form or appearance of a substance but do not create a new substance |
| Chemical properties | characteristics that describe a substance’s ability to change into a different substance, like flammability |
| Physical properties | characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the substance, like color or density |
| Density | the amount of mass in a given volume of a substance (mass ÷ volume) |
| Electrical conductivity | the ability of a material to allow electric current to flow through it |
| Properties | characteristics used to describe matter, such as color, shape, or chemical behavior |
| Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Quantitative | observations or data that use numbers or measurements |
| Qualitative | observations that describe qualities or characteristics without using numbers |
| Volume | the amount of space an object or substance occupies |
| Characteristic Property | a property that is unique to a substance and can be used to identify it, like boiling point |
| Element | a pure substance made of only one kind of atom |
| Thermal conductivity | the ability of a material to transfer heat |
| Solubility | the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance, usually in water |
| Magnetic properties | the ability of a material to attract or repel magnets |
| Melting point | the temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid |
| Boiling point | the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas |
