Grade 8 Q3S1 - What are the properties of matter?

TermDefinition
Chemical changes changes that create new substances with different properties from the original
Physical changes changes that affect the form or appearance of a substance but do not create a new substance
Chemical properties characteristics that describe a substance’s ability to change into a different substance, like flammability
Physical properties characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the substance, like color or density
Density the amount of mass in a given volume of a substance (mass ÷ volume)
Electrical conductivity the ability of a material to allow electric current to flow through it
Properties characteristics used to describe matter, such as color, shape, or chemical behavior
Matter anything that has mass and takes up space
Quantitative observations or data that use numbers or measurements
Qualitative observations that describe qualities or characteristics without using numbers
Volume the amount of space an object or substance occupies
Characteristic Property a property that is unique to a substance and can be used to identify it, like boiling point
Element a pure substance made of only one kind of atom
Thermal conductivity the ability of a material to transfer heat
Solubility the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance, usually in water
Magnetic properties the ability of a material to attract or repel magnets
Melting point the temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid
Boiling point the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas
