What is psychotherapy? A systematic interaction between client & therapist that helps client overcome psychological disorders, adjust, or develop as an individual
Explain the psychodynamic theory. Assumption that psychological problems reflect early childhood experiences & conflicts
Psychoanalysis therapy is what? By Sigmund Freud; therapy method that allows people to say whatever comes to mind
What is catharsis? The expression of repressed feelings or impulses to allow release of associated psychic energy
What is psychoanalysis's free association? The uncensored uttering of all thoughts that come to mind
Describe resistance. The tendency to block repressed feelings or primitive ideas as a defense mechanism
Describe transference. Responding to a person in a way similar to how you responded to a certain person from childhood
Explain wish fulfillment? When dreaming, the acting-out of ideas that are usually repressed when one is conscious
What is an Ego Analyst? A psychodynamically oriented therapist who focuses on conscious coping of the ego instead of the hypothesized unconscious id; client & therapist sit face-to-face
What is humanistic therapy? Form that focuses on a client's subjective conscious in the 'here and now'
Describe Client-Centered Therapy. Carl Rogers; emphasizes the creation of a warm therapeutic atmosphere that allows the client to engage in self-expression
Unconditional positive regard, empathy, & genuineness are qualities of what? Proper client-centered therapies
Explain Gestalt therapy. Fritz Perls; integrates conflicting parts of personality through directive methods
What is Behavior therapy? Systematic application of learning principles to direct modification of behavior
What is the technique where people watch/imitate a model doing something they are scared of? Modeling
Aversive conditioning is what? Pairing the undesired action with an offensive stimuli
Francine Shapiro founded what therapy technique? Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing
What technique only works in a controlled environment? Token Economy
What technique works with operant conditioning? Successive Approximation
Rehearsal & feedback in a group setting make up what technique? Social skills training

What is Cognitive therapy? Focus on client's cognitions (expectations, attitudes, beliefs) and modifying them to relieve stress; Ellis & Beck
What are 'cognitive errors'? Includes selective perception, overgeneralization, blowing out of proportion (magnify), & having absolutist thinking
Describe Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. REBT; by Albert Ellis; encourages client to challenge and correct their own irrational behaviors
Explain Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy or CBT. An approach that uses cognitive and behavioral techniques that were validated by research
What are benefits of group therapy? It is economical, provides more info, group support, reassurance, hope for members, allows role play, & socialization
The Systems Approach is what? Family interaction is studied and modified to allow growth as individuals and as a whole unit
What is Meta-Analysis? A statistical technique for combining and averaging the results of individual research studies
What causes rebound anxiety? When an individual experiences intense anxiety after quitting anti-anxiety medications
What does SSRI stand for? Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors
What does SNRI stand for? Serotonin-Norepinephrine Re-uptake Inhibitors
Electroconvulsive therapy is used for what? To treat severe depression
Who created ECT? Ugo Cerletti
What is psychosurgery? Surgery intended to promote psychological changes or to relieve disordered behavior
Describe the Prefrontal Lobotomy. Severing or destruction of sections of the frontal lobe of the brain
Who founded the lobotomy procedure? Egas Maniz
