| Active voice | n | the form a transitive verb takes when it expresses an action done by its subject. (subject + verb + object) | I didn’t use active voice during the debate. |
| Contribute | v | to add to or give something to help support a specific idea or reach a common purpose | My teammate didn’t contribute anything for the project. |
| Imply | v | to strongly suggest something that is not expressly stated | I had to imply the fact that I wanted to stay home. |
| Reinforce | v | to strengthen or support an idea, usually with additional material | I reinforce that his argument that pineapple GOES on pizza is true. |
| Stanza | n | a group of lines in a poem, often separated by spaces (the “paragraph” of a poem) | His poem had alot of stanzas |
| Alliteration | n | when the same sound or letters appear at the beginning of words in a sentence/phrase | Pirate Pete’s pink pickled pepper pie peas. |
| Allusion | n | A figure of speech in which a writer makes a reference to a famous story, person, place, or event | Why not open the door “Sherlock”! |
| Hyperbole | n | An exaggeration to drive in a point | It’s so big that it could crush me! |
| Imagery | n | language that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, or smell) to help the reader image a text or to experience an event like the author | The dark sky was littered with dots of light while it rained slowly. |
| Metaphor | n | compares two things that are not alike without using like or as | It’s raining cats & dogs! |
| Personification | n | gives human characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, or ideas | The trees danced through night in the wind. |
| Simile | n | compares two things that are not alike using like or as | The boy acted like a monkey. |
| Symbolism | n | using objects, characters, actions, events, etc. (symbols) to represent or signify something more profound or abstract than its literal existence | For some people the Buddha holds very important symbolism. |
| Suspense | n | when the reader experiences uncertainty about how the plot will progress or what a character’s motivation is | He started sweating, left or right, but only one corrider wouldn’t lead to demise. |
| Foreshadowing | n | a literary device where the author or speaker provides hints to later events/things that will happen in a narrative | As he walked sneakily he thought “I will never get caught” but then the guards walked into the room. |

| Conduits | n | channels for conveying water or other fluid. | The conduits transported the water. |
| Toil | v or n | work extremely hard or incessantly. (can be a noun) | The grueling toil was painful. |
| Strife | n | angry or bitter disagreement over fundamental issues; conflict. | Everyone was having strife. |
| Blithe | adj. | happy or joyous. | The boy had much blithe. |
| Sages | n | profoundly wise men, especially ones who feature in ancient history or legend. | The wise sages knew alot of things. |
| Lore | n | a body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group, typically passed from person to person by word of mouth. | FNAF has too much lore. |
| Meddling | participle/adj. | interfere in or busy oneself unduly with something that is not one's concern. | He keeps meddling where he shouldn’t. |
