contribute Part of Speech: verb Definition: to add to or give something to help support a specific idea or reach a common purpose Sentence: Lack of sleep can contribute to health issues.
emphasize Part of Speech: verb Definition: to give special importance to something when writing or speaking Sentence: I must emphasize that this exercise should not be done by pregnant women.
impact Part of Speech: verb Definition: to have a strong effect on something or someone Sentence: The book had a huge impact when it first came out.
reference Part of Speech: verb Definition: to mention or bring attention to Sentence: Her former teacher gave her a reference when she applied for the job.
alliteration Part of Speech: noun/verb/adjective Definition: when the same sound or letters appear at the beginning of words in a sentence/phrase Example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
allusion Part of Speech: noun Definition: a figure of speech in which a writer makes a reference to a famous story, person, object, or event Example: You're a regular Einstein. (Historical figure)
hyperbole Part of Speech: noun Definition: an exaggeration to drive in a point Example: I've told you a million times to clean your room.
imagery Part of Speech: noun Definition: language that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, or smell) to help the reader image a text or to experience an event like the author Example: My toes sank into the sand on the beach.
metaphor Part of Speech: noun Definition: compares two things that are not alike without using like or as Example: The stars are diamonds in the sky.
onomatopoeia Part of Speech: Definition: a sound written in word form. Example: BOOM!
personification Part of Speech: verb/adjective/adverb Definition: gives human characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, or ideas Example: The clouds marched across the sky.
simile Part of Speech: noun Definition: compares two things that are not alike using like or as Example: Her voice is like music to my ears.
credible Part of Speech: adjective Definition: able to be believed; convincing Sentence: The police are seeking a credible witness to the crime.
relevant evidence Part of Speech: noun Definition: facts, details, examples, etc. that support the writer's reasoning Sentence: You must provide relevant evidence to support your claim.
Latin prefix mal- Definition of "mal-": bad, ill, wrong Word that uses mal-: malfunction Definition of malfunction: a failure to function or function improperly Sentence using malfunction: The computer had a malfunction, so I couldn't finish my homework.
