| Term | Definition |

| Mixtures | a combination of two or more substances that are physically combined but not chemically bonded |
| Pure substances | matter that has a fixed composition and properties, made of only one type of particle, but the particle can have multiple types of atoms chemically bonded. |
| Solutions | a type of mixture where one substance is dissolved evenly in another |
| Element | a pure substance made of only one kind of atom |
| Compound | a pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined |
| Heterogeneous mixture | a mixture where the different parts are NOT evenly mixed and can often be seen |
| Homogeneous mixture | a mixture where the substances are evenly mixed and look the same throughout |
| Physical properties | characteristics of matter that can be observed or measured without changing its identity, like color or density |
| Evaporation | the process where a liquid changes into a gas at the surface without boiling |
| Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Solute | the substance that is dissolved in a solution |
| Energy | the ability to do work or cause change, such as moving objects or changing temperature |
