Africa Part 3

TermDefinition
niche partitioning the process by which different species divide and utilize resources to reduce competition, allowing them to coexist in the same ecosystem
homeostasis keeping an internal balance ("healthy")
photosynthesis process that converts light energy into chemical energy
cellular respiration process where cells convert food and oxygen into usable energy, ATP
photosynthesis formula H2O + CO2 + sunlight --> C6H12O6 + O2 water + carbon dioxide + sunlight --> glucose + oxygen
cellular respiration formula C6H12O6 + O2 -->H2O + CO2 + ATP glucose + oxygen --> water + carbon dioxide + energy
stomate opening in a leaf that allows for gas exchange between the plant & the outside environment
niche an organism's role in the ecosystem
selective pressure Something that causes a particular trait to have an advantage over another trait. (ex:tusklessness in elephants)
keystone species an organism that has a disproportionately large impact on its ecosystem relative to its abundance
metabolism all of the chemical reactions that take place within a living organism
coexistence living or existing at the same time or in the same place
biodiversity the variety of all living things on Earth
limiting factor An environmental factor that prevents animal populations from growing out of control
gel electrophoresis DNA is loaded into wells and then electricity is run through a gel. helps to determine genetic relationships
autotroph organism that makes its own nutrients
heterotroph organism that must eat to obtain nutrients
chloroplast site of photosynthesis; found only in plants

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
