Unit 9 Investigating Structures and Behaviors or Organisms

Environment The Surroundings or conditions in which an organism must survive.
Function What something is used for purpose
Inherited Traits A characteristic that is passed from the parent to offspring
Instinctual Behavior (Instincts) Automatic behaviors that are inherited
Learned Behavior Something an organism learns to do as they interact in their world.
Species A group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals
Structure A part or group of an organism
Survive (Survival) Continue to live or exist.
Acquired Trait (Learned) Something an organism learns to do as they interact in their world.
Advantage Having a favorable position or benefit in some kind of situation.
Disadvantage Having the least favorable position in any situation.
Habitat The natural home for an animal or plant where it can find everything it needs to survive, such as food, water, shelter, and space.
Organism A living thing, like an animal, plant, or bacterium.
Offspring The children or young of any living thing
Migration The movement of people of animals from one place to another.
Tundra A cold, treeless region with a short growing season and a permanently frozen layer of ground called permafrost.
Jungle A type of dense, tropical forest found in a warm, rainy areas near the Earth's equator.
Grassland A large, open areas where grasses are the main type of plant life, with only a few trees or shrubs
Forest A large area with many trees, forming a complex ecosystem that includes plants, animals, and the non-living environment
Desert A large, very dry area of land that gets very little rainfall, typically less than 10 inches a year, and can have extreme temperatures.
