December Spelling Activities for 5th Grade

TermDefinition
colony A group of people who settle in a new land but are still connected to their home country.
independence Freedom from being controlled by another person or country.
constitution A written plan of government that describes laws and rights.
government The group of people and systems that make and enforce laws for a country or community.
democracy A form of government in which people vote to choose their leaders and laws.
citizen A person who legally belongs to a country and has rights and responsibilities there.
rights Freedoms or protections that people are allowed to have by law or agreement.
responsibility A duty or job you are expected to do and take care of.
amendment A change or addition made to a law or document, such as a constitution.
congress The group of elected people in the United States who make federal laws.
president The elected leader of a republic, such as the United States.
election A process in which people vote to choose leaders or decide on issues.
supreme Highest in power, rank, or importance.
justice Fair treatment under the law; or a judge on a high court.
law A rule made by a government that people in a community or country must follow.
bill A written proposal for a new law.
veto The power to reject a bill so it does not become a law.
debate A formal discussion where people present different opinions and reasons.
campaign Organized actions, speeches, and events to win an election or support a cause.
ballot The paper or electronic form used to cast a vote in an election.
synonym A word that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another word.
antonym A word that has the opposite meaning of another word.
homonym A word that is spelled and pronounced like another word but has a different meaning.
homophone A word that sounds the same as another word but has a different spelling and meaning.
prefix A word part added to the beginning of a base word that changes its meaning.
suffix A word part added to the end of a base word that changes its meaning or form.
root The basic part of a word that carries its main meaning.
compound A word made by joining two or more smaller words together.
contraction A shorter form of two words made by leaving out letters and adding an apostrophe.
possessive A word form that shows ownership or belonging, often using an apostrophe.
plural A word form that shows there is more than one person, place, or thing.
singular A word form that shows there is only one person, place, or thing.
irregular Not following the usual rules, such as irregular plural or past tense forms.
abbreviation A shortened form of a word or phrase, like “Dr.” for “Doctor.”
punctuation Marks in writing, such as periods and commas, that help show meaning and pauses.
capitalize To write the first letter of a word in uppercase.
apostrophe A punctuation mark (’) used in contractions and to show possession.
quotation Words that someone said or wrote, shown with quotation marks.
sentence A group of words that expresses a complete thought.
question A sentence that asks something and usually ends with a question mark.
