November Spelling Activities for 5th Grade

TermDefinition
geometry The branch of math that studies shapes, sizes, and the properties of space.
polygon A flat, closed shape made of straight line segments.
triangle A polygon with three sides and three angles.
rectangle A polygon with four sides and four right angles.
square A rectangle with all four sides the same length.
pentagon A polygon with five sides and five angles.
hexagon A polygon with six sides and six angles.
octagon A polygon with eight sides and eight angles.
angle The space between two lines or rays that meet at a point, measured in degrees.
vertex The point where two or more lines, rays, or edges meet.
astronomy The science that studies the sun, moon, stars, planets, and other objects in space.
planet A large round object that orbits a star, such as Earth orbiting the Sun.
orbit The curved path an object follows as it moves around another object in space.
rotation The spinning of an object around its own axis.
revolution The movement of one object around another, such as Earth moving around the Sun.
axis An imaginary line through the center of an object around which it rotates.
equator An imaginary line around the middle of Earth that is equal distance from the poles.
hemisphere Half of a sphere; often used to describe half of Earth (Northern or Southern).
eclipse When one object in space moves into the shadow of another object.
constellation A group of stars that forms a pattern and is given a name.
telescope A tool that makes faraway objects in space look closer and clearer.
colony A group of people who settle in a new place but are still connected to their home country.
observatory A building or place with special equipment for watching the sky and stars.
independence Freedom from being controlled by another person or country.
satellite An object that orbits a planet; it can be natural (like the Moon) or man-made.
constitution A written plan of government that describes laws and rights.
meteor A small piece of rock or metal from space that burns up as it enters Earth’s atmosphere.
government The group of people and systems that make and enforce laws for a country or community.
asteroid A small rocky object that orbits the Sun, mostly found between Mars and Jupiter.
democracy A form of government in which people vote to choose their leaders and laws.
comet A small icy object that orbits the Sun and often has a glowing tail.
citizen A person who legally belongs to a country and has rights and responsibilities there.
galaxy A huge system of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity, like the Milky Way.
rights Freedoms or protections that people are allowed to have by law or agreement.
universe Everything that exists, including all space, matter, energy, planets, and galaxies.
responsibility A duty or job you are expected to do and take care of.
nebula A large cloud of gas and dust in space where new stars can form.
amendment A change or addition made to a law or document, such as a constitution.
gravity The force that pulls objects toward each other, like keeping us on the ground.
congress The group of elected people in the United States who make federal laws.
