Chemical Reactions

TermDefinition
chemical reaction a change in which one or more substances are changed into new substances.
reactants the starting substance(s) in a reaction that react together
products the ending substance(s) in a reaction
chemical equation a shorthand way to write a chemical reaction using chemical formuals and other symbols
coefficient numbers to the left of a chemical formula that incidates the number of each compound involved in the reaction
Law of conservation of matter or mass matter (mass) cannot be created nor destroyed only transferred from one form to another
balance chemical equation a chemical equation with the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the arrow
mole a counting unit used in chemistry to describe the amount of a substance
molar mass the mass in grams of one mole of a substance
combustion reaction reaction that occurs when a substance reacts with oxygen to produce energy in the form of heat and light
synthesis reaction reaction in which two or more substance combine to form a single new substance, represented by the general formula A + B --> AB
decomposition reaction reaction in which one substance breaks down to produce two new substances, represented by the general formula AB --> A + B
single displacment reaction reactions in which element replaces another element in a compound, represented by the general formula A + BC --> AB +C
double dispacement reaction reactions in which two compounds swap elements, represented by the general formula AB + CD --> AC + BD
exothermic reactions chemical reactions in which energy is released
endothermic reactions chemical reactions in which energy is absorbed
