Abrahamic Religions

Abraham Patriarch of Judaism; established the Covenant with God.
Monotheism The core belief in one god.
Torah The most sacred Jewish text; the first five books of the Hebrew Bible
Covenant The sacred agreement between God and the Jewish people establishing mutual obligations.
Exodus The liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt
Diaspora The scattering of the Jewish people from their ancestral homeland of Israel.
Synagogue The Jewish house of worship
Rabbinic Judaism The form of Judaism developed after 70 CE
Jesus Christ Founder of Christianity; believed to be the Son of God
Trinity The core Christian belief in one God existing as three co-equal persons: Father
Gospels The four sacred texts (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John)
Paul The Apostle who successfully argued that Gentile (non-Jewish) converts did not have to follow all Jewish laws.
Gentile The term for a person who is not Jewish.
Great Schism The 1054 CE split that divided the Christian Church into Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy.
Eucharist (Communion) The central Christian sacrament reenacting Jesus's Last Supper.
Golden Rule The central ethical teaching of Jesus: Treat others as you would want to be treated yourself.
