Cell Division

TermDefinition
Asexual Reproduction Process by which a single parent reproduces by itself. Parent and daughter cells are identical
Sexual Reproduction Process that involves two parents that combine their genetic material. Parent and child are genetically different.
Cell Cycle Series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide (Interphase, Mitosis, Cytokinesis)
Mitosis A type of cell division that results in two identical daughter cells; A type of asexual reproduction
Meiosis Cell division that produces 4 genetically different daughter cells; Used in sexual reproduction
Interphase Where a cell spends most of its life. During this phase cells grow and copy its DNA. Also called "the resting phase"
Cytokinesis Last phase of the cell cycle where the division of the cytoplasm occurs
Prophase Mitosis phase where chromosomes become visible, centrioles and spindle fibers appear
Metaphase Mitosis phase where chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
Anaphase Mitosis phase where chromosomes pull away from each other and move to opposite ends of the cell
Telophase Mitosis phase in which the nuclear membrane reforms around each new set of chromosomes. You can start to see two distinct cells.
Chromosome A structure found in the nucleus that contains all of the genetic material for an organism.
Centromere Area where the chromatids of a chromosome are attached
Chromatid Half of a chromosome
