Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Expression A math problem written with numbers and symbols, but no equal sign. Example: 5 + 3 or 7 × 2
Represents To show something using a picture, drawing, or symbol. (To show or stand for) Example: A shaded square can represent a fraction.
Length (Measurement) How long something is from one end to the other. Example: The length of a pencil is 7 inches.
Fraction A number that shows a part of a whole. Example: 1/2 means one out of two equal parts.
Equation A math problem that shows two things are equal, using an equal sign. Example: 5 + 3 = 8
Decimal A number that uses a decimal point to show parts of a whole, like money or measurements. Example: $0.75 or 2.5 meters.
Sum The answer you get when you add numbers together. (Result of addition) Example: The sum of 4 and 5 is 9.
Quotient The answer you get when you divide numbers. (Result of division) Example: The quotient of 10 divided by 2 is 5.
Product The answer you get when you multiply numbers. (Result of multiplication) Example: The product of 3 and 4 is 12.
Difference The answer you get when you subtract one number from another. (Result of subtraction) Example: The difference between 7 and 3 is 4.
Model A drawing or picture that helps you understand a math problem. (Visual representation) Example: Using blocks to model a multiplication problem.
Determine To figure out or calculate the answer to a problem. (To find out or calculate) Example: Determine the total number of students.
Total The whole amount or number of something when everything is counted together. Example: The total cost of the toys.
Amount How much of something there is. Example: The amount of water in a bottle.
Each Refers to every single item or unit. (Per unit) Example: If each student gets 2 pencils, it means every student gets 2.
Equally Dividing something so that every part is the exact same size or amount. (In equal parts) Example: Sharing candy equally among friends.
Remaining What is left over after some part has been used or taken away. Example: The remaining cookies after you ate some.
Distance How far it is from one place or point to another. Example: The distance from home to school.
Mass How much "stuff" is in an object, or how heavy it is (similar to weight for 5th graders). Example: The mass of a rock is 10 grams.
Population The total number of people or animals living in a certain area. Example: The population of our town is 5,000.
