Cross culture stuff

Sense of community - McMillian and Charvis - Membership - influence - shared emotional connection - integration +fulfillment of needs
Multiculturalism Individuals from many cultures co-exist and live my one set of rules
Pluralism Each group holds onto their own rules, traditions +rituals in the same location.
Cultural Norms shared rules set by specific group to guide behavior
Issues with cultural diversity cultural sensitivity/lack of awareness - work ethic/approach to task - decision making - communication
Implicit racism Unconscious/concealed negative behaviors towards individuals of another race
Explicit racism Intentional Negative behavior towards people of another race
Culture shock Overwhelmed feeling due to difference in culture between new and old home
Assimilation adopting new culture + losing cultural markers that made minority distinct from majority
Acculturation keeping core values and ideas from original culture while abiding by rules of new one.
Intergroup contact individuals engage with people from other groups - reducing fear of unfamiliarity
Equality contact must take place where there is equality - no power difference/opportunity for dominance to occur
Sustained Contact interaction is most likely to reduce prejudice if its long term
Superordinate goal Shared goal that can only be achieved with both groups cooperation
Mutual Interdependence Both groups must rely on each other to successfully complete task
