Chapter 13 terms and definitions and other keywords

TermDefinition
Average Wholesale Price (AWP) Average price at which a drug is sold; the data is compiled from info provided by manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies. The AWP is often used to calculate reimbursement.
Red Book (pg300-301) - AWP The Average Wholesale Price can be found in the Drug Topics Red Book. Use this book to obtain the price of a medication. The Red Book is available electronically, which allows for real-time updates on price changes.
Limitation of Plan Exceeded (302-303) Refers to a patient who has exhausted their benefits for the time or quantity limit of a drug specified by the insurance plan. However, the patient can contact the insurance to request an extention. Exceptions for diabetes, HIV, and AIDS exist.
Fast Mover (307) Drugs kept in a separate area because of high volume of use. These are ordered in high quantities, or are ordered more often.
Slow Mover (307) Drugs that are not commonly prescribed. They must be checked regularly to check if the dates are close to expiring.
Special Orders (307) Drugs used by few patients, but may be important for proper treatment. These are usually ordered at the time of use, and some of them may be nonformulary.
