Matter Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| physical properties | the characteristics of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance |
| solid | state of matter in which particles are packed tightly together and it maintains its shape |
| liquid | state of matter in which the particles flow past each other and it takes on the shape of its container |
| gas | state of matter in which the particles flow freely and they take on both the shape and the volume of their container |
| density | the concentration of matter in an object |
| thermal energy | energy from heat |
| electric energy | energy from electricity |
| floating | remaining on the surface of a liquid without sinking |
| sinking | going below the surface of a liquid |
| iron filings | very small pieces of iron that look like powder |
| magnetism | the force of repulsion (pushing) or attraction (pulling) between poles of a magnet |
| boiling point | the temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas |
| freezing point | the temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid |
| melting point | the temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid |
| conduction (conduct/conductor) | the direct transfer of heat between objects that touch |
| insulator (insulate/insulation) | A substance that does not readily allow the passage of heat, electricity, or sound |
| solubility | the ability of one substance to be dissolved in another substance |
| dissolve | when one material spreads out uniformly into another material, so that the first material seems to disappear. |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| Celsius scale | the temperature scale that registers 0 degrees as the freezing point of water and 100 degrees as the boiling point of water |
| mixture | when two or more substances are mixed together but can be physically separated fairly easily |
| solution | a mixture in which one substance dissolves into another |
