Emotion and motivation
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Intrinsic motivation | Internal drive that energizes and directs/pushes behavior |
| Drive-reduction theory | idea that a physiological need creates an aroused state (a drive) that motivates us to satisfy the need (restore homeostasis) |
| Homeostasis | tendency to maintain a balanced/constant internal state; regulation of any aspect of body chemistry, such as blood glucose, around a particular level |
| Yerkes-Dodson law | performance is best at moderate levels of arousal, decreases otherwise |
| Drive | Aroused state triggered by a need |
| Incentives | A positive or negative environmental stimulus that motivates/pulls behavior |
| Physiological needs | food, water; first and lowest level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs |
| Safety needs | security, stability, shelter; second level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs |
| Love/belonging needs | relationships; third level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs |
| Esteem needs | self-esteem, achievement, competence; fourth level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs |
| Self-actualization needs | need to live up to/reach our full potential; fifth level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs |
| Self-transcendence needs | need to find identity/meaning beyond self; sixth and highest level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs |
| James-Lange theory | our experience of emotion occurs when we become aware of physiological responses to an (emotion) arousing stimulus; arousal -> emotion |
| Cannon-Bard theory | emotion-arousing stimulus triggers both (1) physiological responses and (2) subjective experience of emotion at the SAME TIME |
| Two-factor (Schachter-Singer) theory | to experience emotion, we must (1) be physically aroused and (2) cognitively label said arousal |
| Lazarus theory | appraisal (conscious and/or unconscious) defines the emotions we feel |
| Basic emotions | joy, anger, interest, disgust, surprise, sadness, fear, shame, guilt, contempt |
| Autonomic nervous system (ANS) | (sympathetic division) regulates physiological arousal in emotion, triggers adrenal glands, provides energy |
| Fight-or-flight | sympathetic nervous system releases glucose into the bloodstream to provide energy |
| Polygraph | a machine often used in lie detection; measures emotion-linked changes in perspiration, heart rate, and breathing |
