Vocabulary words related to the Renaissance

| Philosophy | the study of knowledge and truth |
| Patron | a person who gives money and support to an artist in exchange for works of art |
| Dome | a large, rounded roof or ceiling |
| Guild | an organized group of people who make or sell specific goods |
| Apprentice | to learn a skill or trade by working with a skilled craftsman for a period of time |
| Commission | to hire an artist to produce a work of art |
| Fresco | a style of painting in which the artist first applies a layer of plaster onto a wall and then paints directly on the wet plaster; once dry, the paint and plaster become a part of the wall |
| Portrait | a painting, drawing, or photograph of a person that usually only includes the person’s head and shoulders |
| Scaffold | a temporary platform on which a person stands or sits while working high above the ground |
| Madonna | another way to identify Mary, the mother of Jesus |
| Epitaph | something written or said in memory of a person who died |
| Scribe | long ago, a person who copied manuscripts or books |
