| Construction documents | The contracts, drawings, and specifications requirements for a new construction project or remodel project. Drawings offer precise, technical information and include floor plans, elevations, sections, and detail drawings |

| Architectural symbol | A symbolic representation of a building element used on drawings showing its placement in relationship to other elements in the structure |
| Section view | A portion of the set of construction plans that shows a section or cut through of the structure |
| Detail view | This view shows a detail of the plan that has been magnified for closer inspection of its construction elements |
| Floor plan | This type of plan view shows the location of walls, windows, doors, fixtures and placement of various systems in a structure. It is drawn from an overhead or bird’s eye view as though the roof had been removed so you could look down into the structure |
| Elevations | A 2-D drawing of a wall from floor to ceiling in a structure. It will include structural elements such as doors and windows |
| T-square | T-shaped ruler used in mechanical drawings to create horizontal lines |
| Architectural triangle | These tools are pre-calibrated at specific angles to aid the designer in creating accurate drawings |
| Architectural scale | This measuring device is calibrated to assist the designer/architect in the creation of accurate scaled drawings. It consists of 12 scaled calibrations and is ruled for easy reading |
| Template | A thick plastic sheet with cutouts that can be traced to provide the accurate shape and size of objects to be drawn into a floor plan |
| Furniture template | Contains a variety of furnishings used in structures and may be classified as residential (home) or commercial (offices and institutional) |
| Bath fixture template | Contains the standardized shapes and sizes of bath fixtures such as showers, tubs, toilets and lavatories |
| Kitchen fixture template | Contains the standardized shapes and sizes of components used in kitchens such as sinks, cabinetry and appliances |
| Structural template | Contains the standardized shapes and sizes of structural elements such as doors, windows, fireplaces, stairs etc |
| Tracing paper | Strong transparent paper used for making drawings, designs, and tracing. Often referred to as “trash paper” |
| CADD | Computer-aided drawing and design software that speeds the process in creating plans that are accurate and industry accepted |
| Rendering | Enhancement of a line drawing by adding color, value, texture and shading to show detail. The use of implied shade and shadow turns a 2-D imaginary space into the appearance of a 3-D space |
| Pencil | Using various lead pencils to create value through shading and line depth. Corrections may be easy to make |
| Pen and ink | Using a pen to create value through shading techniques and line depth. Corrections are difficult to make |
