Chap 12 - Emotion

Micro Expressions quick, tiny facial expressions that show true feelings
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) controls body organs automatically (like heart and stomach)
Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) gets your body ready for action or stress (fight or flight)
Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) calms your body down and helps with rest and digestion
James-Lange Theory you feel emotions because your body reacts first, then you notice those reactions
Pure Autonomic Failure the body can't control internal organs automatically
Schachter and Singer's Theory of Emotions how strong you body reacts affects how strong you emotion feels, but your mind decided which emotion it is
Circumplex Model a circular chart that shows how emotions are related (like happy vs sad, calm vs excited)
Broaden and Build Hypothesis being happy helps you think more openly and try new things
Emotional Intelligence knowing and understanding emotions - both yours and others - and using that knowledge to make good decisions
Anxiety feeling nervous or on edge; easily startled
Polygraph a "lie detector" that measures heart rate, breathing, and other body signs
Guilty Knowledge Test a test that looks for physical reaction when a person hears details only the guilty would know
Contempt feeling someone or something is beneath you or has broken social rules
Disgust feeling grossed out by something dirty or unpleasant
Positive Psychology the study of what makes life good and meaningful (like happiness or hope)
Subjective Well-Being how happy and satisfied you feel with your life
Cortisol a stress hormone that gives your body extra energy when needed
Stress how your body reacts to challenges or demands
Health Psychology the study of how your habits and emotions affect your health
General Adaptation Syndrome the body's pattern of responding to stress
Type A Personality competitive, stressed, and easily angered people
Type B Personality calm, relaxed, and less competitive people
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) long-term anxiety or sadness after a scary or traumatic event
Inoculation getting small doses of stress to prepare for bigger challenges later
Resilience the ability to recover quickly from stress or hardship
