Therapy doesn't work unless honest and share
How do I know when I need therapy? Adjustment difficulties, confused, lost, uncomfortable, trauma, abuse, addictions, ruminations, family or heath problems
Clients want objective, honest feedback
Therapy topics include: isolation, burnout frustration, burnout, news, imposter syndrome, perfectionism, dysphoria, racism. porn addiction, online rejection, bullying
Which therapist is good? referal, pragmatic, humble, flexible, modest, approach
Is individual, group or family therapy best? group not for shy, good for interpersonal issures, cheaper
Benefits of online therapy convenient, efficient, may share more, but tech problems, no body language, distracted
Limited finances? Sliding scale, pro bono, religious organizations
Therapist good for me? talk about anything, respected, admire, safe, honest input
Is therapy working? getting better, transitional disorientation, ask therapist, change in self-defeating behaviors, new skills, ideas
How do I limit progress? blame therapist, want quick cure, cut off feelings, transference, not doing hw, scared of issues, argue, make excuses, annoying
When to quit? up to client; goals met, break to integrate and internalize (stalled progress)
Why clients drop out satisfied, often don't tell therapist, unresolved issues, not understood, too expensive
why therapist does not understand me lecture, no empathy, blaming others, judged, ask to do stuff I don't want to do
Think of self as therapist in training, critical about what works
Experience self-indulgent, dishonest, seductive end therapy
Family may pressure to end therapy
A good therapist is patient, responsible, dependable reflective, interested, self-critical, joyful, playful, funny
Choose therapist by background, training credentials, approach, religious values, rules
When you quit share feedback, renegotiate?
First look at your behaviour, then blame therapist
Therapists blame clients for resistance, obstruction, staying stuck to avoid responsibility
therapist learning curve treatment approach, relationship configuration, engagement style
