Plot Development
Elements/Stages of Plot
| Term | Definition |

| Plot | What the narrative (story) is about... the major events. |
| Exposition | The beginning of a story/narrative... the opening. |
| Rising Action | Where we get to know the main characters, the antagonist is working to create conflict (problems) for the protagonist |
| Climax | The turning point of the story, where things are at their worst for the protagonist, and the reader/audience feels shock, disbelief, or suspense. |
| Falling Action | When the protagonist begins taking steps to work through the conflict (stands up to the antagonist) |
| Resolution | For better or worse, the conflict is resolved. |
| Theme | The moral of the story or the lesson the author wants the reader to learn. Must be universal (apply to all types of people). |
| Universal | Applies to all types of people. |
| Symbolism | When an object, person, or situation is used to represent a larger meaning, idea, or concept. |
| Foreshadowing | When an author gives hints or clues about what is going to happen in a story/narrative. |
| Irony | when what is said seems to contradict what is meant OR a situation turns out very differently than what was expected. |
| Protagonist | The hero of the narrative. |
| Antagonist | The villain/character who creates conflict for the protagonist. |
| Conflict | Problem or struggle the protagonist works to overcome. |
| Internal Conflict | A conflict that occurs within the heart or mind of a character. |
| External Conflict | A conflict that occurs between two or more characters in a narrative. |
| Setting | Where AND when a story takes place. |
