Detailing Ear

TermDefinition
Pinna Funnel shaped part of the external ear that focuses sound towards the auditory canal.
Auditory Canal The canal that conducts sound through the external ear.
Cochlea The fluid-filled part of the inner ear shaped like a snail shell.
Organ of Corti The structure on the basilar membrane that contains sensory receptors for hearing.
Semicircular Canals* 3 canals attached to the cochlea with fluid in them that help you process which direction you're moving.
Tympanic Membrane (Eardrum) Membrane that separates the external ear from the middle ear, and transforms the waves of sound into mechanical vibrations.
Hammer A tiny bone in the middle ear that vibrates when the eardrum is struck by sound waves.
Anvil The tiny bone in the middle ear that transmits sound vibrations from the ear drum to the inner ear.
Stirrup A tiny bone in the middle ear that transmits sound vibrations from the ear drum to the oval window.
Oval Window The membrane-covered opening of the cochlea where the vibrations are transmitted to.
