Chap 11-Motivation

QuestionAnswer
Motivation what makes you want to do something or reach a goal
Drive a feeling of need or discomfort that pushes you to act until it's satisfied (like hunger or thirst)
Homeostasis your body's way of keeping things balanced and steady (like temperature or energy levels)
Allostasis how your body adjusts to changes and different situations to stay balanced
Incentives rewards or things that attract you to take action
Extrinsic Motivation doing something for a reward or to avoid punishment
Intrinsic Motivation doing something because you enjoy it or find it interesting
Hierarchy of needs the idea that basic needs (like food and safety) must be met before focusing on higher ones (like love or goals)
Self-actualization becoming the best version of yourself and reaching your full potential
Mere measurement effect just thinking about doing something goof makes you more likely to actually do it
Grit sticking with your goals even when things get hard
Delay of gratification waiting to get a better reward later instead of taking a smaller one now
Scientific-management approach (Theory X) bosses control work by finding the most efficient way to do tasks and training workers to follow it
Human-relations approach (Theory Y) bosses believe workers are happier and more motivated when they have responsibility and variety
Job burnout feeling tired, unmotivated, and discouraged from working too much or too long
Transformational leader a leader who inspires and encourages others to do their best
Transactional leader a leader who uses rewards and punishments to keep people on track
Glucose the main sugar in your blood that gives your body energy
Insulin a hormone that helps move glucose from your blood into your cells for energy
Set point the body's target weight or balance it tries to maintain
Leptin a hormone made by fat cells that tells your brain when you have enough stored fat or energy
Anorexia nervosa an eating disorder where someone fears gaining weight and eats very little
Bulimia nervosa an eating disorder where someone overeats, then tries to get rid of the food by vomiting or other methods
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) a disease spread through sexual contact that weakens the immune system
Testosterone the main male sex hormone
Estradiol the main female sex hormone
Gender identity how a person sees themselves - male, female, or another gender
Sexual orientation who someone is attracted to (men, women, both, or neither)
