Vocabulary words for poetry

Stanza A paragraph in poetry
Line A sentence in poetry that does not follow typical grammar rules
Rhyme Scheme the pattern of repeated rhyming words in a poem
Form The shape, structure, or appearance of a piece of writing
Line break the place where a line ends
Stanza break The blank space that divides two stanzas from each other
Apostrophe writing that addresses a person or thing that is not present
Tone The attitude in a piece of writing, expressed through the style of writing and the words the author uses
Anaphora The repetition of words or phrases at the start of a series of likes in a poem
Figurative Language Words or phrases that mean more than their dictionary definition
Metaphor Comparison without using like or as
Simile Comparison using like or as
Rhyme Words that end in the same sound or sounds
Quatrain A four line stanza
Implied Metaphor A comparison that is not made directly
Allusion An indirect reference to an outside work of art or a cultural figure
Villanelle A poetic form with 19 likes and a set pattern of repeating lines and rhyming words
Parallel Structure When the same form s repeated in a series of lines or stanzas, often used to demonstrate a link between two ideas or descriptions
Ars Poetica A poem about the craft of poetry
Personification Describing non-human things as if they had human qualities
