Brand Name Trademark of a drug or device held by the originating manufacturing company
Chemical Structure The makeup of a chemical, including the elements, shape, bonding types, molecular configuration, charges, and so on; the nature of the chemical's structure has so much to do with the chemical's stability, reactivity, and physical and chemical properties
Drug Classification Categorization based on various characteristics, including the chemical structure of a drug, the action of a drug, and/or the therapeutic or anatomical use of a drug
Drug Facts and Comparisons Reference book found in pharmacies that contains detailed information on more than 22,000 prescription and 6,000 over-the-counter medications; drugs are divided into therapeutic groups for easy comparison
Formulary A list of approved drugs to be stocked by the pharmacy; also a list of drugs covered by an insurance company
Generic Name Name assigned to a medication or nonproprietary name of drug
Monograph comprehensive info on a med's actions within that class of drugs; also lists generic and trade names, ingredients, dosages, side effects, adverse effects, how the patient should take meds and food or other drugs to avoid while taking the medication
Nonformulary A list of drugs that are not included in the list of preferred medications that a committee of pharmacists and physicians DEEMS TO BE SAFEST, MOST EFFECTIVE, AND MOST ECONOMICAL;
package Insert The official prescribing information for a prescription drug; the medication information sheet provided by the manufacturer that includes side effects, dosage forms, indications, and other important information
Trade Name The proprietary or brand name given to a drug by the company that developed it; the trade name may be related to the function or main use of the drug
Drug Facts and Comparisons Contains quick and accurate reference and drug comparison and is the most frequently used book by pharmacists
Physicians Desk Reference (PDR) A compilation of package inserts with a complete description of each drug listed, including its chemical structure and study results
Drug Topics Red Book good source of information about the average and wholesale drug costs and prices
Orange book comprehensive listing used to determinate whether a generic drug is the same as a brand drug
American Hospital Formulary Service Drug Information Provides drug monographs that list drug information; used mainly by hospitals
USP-NF Provides access to official standards of the FDA
United States Pharmacists Pharmacopeia comprehensive compilation of information on compounding products and ingredients and their safety as well as products used to treat specific medical conditions
Clinical Pharmacology electronic drug compendium commonly encountered in retail and health system pharmacy settings and an officially recognized compendium by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Ident-a-Drug Includes more than 38,000 listings of tablet and capsule identifications
Purple Book comprehensive list of approved biological products with biosimilar and interchangeable products
Micromedex Healthcare Evidence Provides an online and mobile application that can be used by physicians, pharmacists, and nurses within a health care facility through several different software programs that can be purchased
Trissel's Handbook on Injectable Drugs A well-known reference used for information on parental agents; used mostly in the hospital setting
American Drug Index Contains information for both prescription and over-the-counter products; covers pronunciation of drugs, active ingredients, dosage forms, and packaging, to name a few
Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics Lists pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, drug transport/drug transporters, drug metabolism
Handbook of Nonprescriptions Drugs Provides self-care options for nonprescription medica-tions, nutritional supplements, medical foods, and complementary and alternative therapies, to name a few
Martindale's The Complete Drug Reference Provides information on drugs in clinical use world wide
Remington's Pharamaceutical Sciences: The Science and Practice of Pharmacy Covers the entire scope of pharmacy, from the history of pharmacy and ethics to the specifics of industrial pharmacy and pharmacy practice
Pediatric and Neonatal Dosage Handbook Provides information on suggested current drug dosages for pediatric patients
