Energy

Year 8 Science

TermDefinition
What is energy? The ability to do work or cause change, it exists in various forms
What is kinetic energy? The energy and object possesses due to its motion
What is potential energy? The stored energy an object has due to its position, state, or arrangement
The three types of potential energy gravitation, chemical, elastical
What forms of energy are kinetic? mechanical, thermal, radiant, electrical & sound
What forms of energy are potential? chemical
What forms of energy are both? nuclear, electrical (depends)
What is the Law of conservation? It states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed from one form to another
Gravitational (potential) energy The energy an object has due to its position in a gravitational field, increasing with its mass, its height, and the strength of the field
Elastic (potential) energy the energy stored in an elastic object when it is deformed by stretching, compressing, or twisting
Chemical (potential) energy the energy stored within the bonds of atoms and molecules, which is released or absorbed during a chemical reaction
Conduction When heat is transferred by a substance flowing from a warmer area to a cooler area through direct contact between two solid objects
Convection When heat is transferred by a substance flowing from a warmer area to cooler area in liquid or gases
Radiation The transfer of heat from electromagnetic waves
Energy Transfer the movement of energy from one form or object to another
Energy Transformation the process of converting energy from one form to another
5 types of stored energy gravitational, chemical, elastic, nuclear and electrical
What is heat transfer? the movement of thermal energy from a warmer area to a cooler one
What are two example of conduction? frying egg and holding a hot mug
What are two example of convection? Hair dryer and boiling water
What are two example of radiation? the sun and microwave
What is the unit for energy? joule

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
