| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Encoding | The process of getting information into the memory system |
| Storage | The process of retaining encoded information over time |
| Sensory memory | Immediate, very brief recording of sensory information in the memory system |
| Working memory | Conscious, active processing of both (1) incoming sensory information and (2) information retrieved from long term memory |
| Long-term memory | Relatively permanent and limitless archive in the memory system. Includes knowledge, skills, and experiences. |
| Spacing effect | The tendency for distributed study/practice to yield better long-term retention than is achieved through massed study/practice. |
| Mnemonics | Memory aid, especially techniques that use vivid imagery and organizational devices |
| Priming | The (often unconscious) activation of particular associations in memory |
| Proactive interference | Old information disrupts new learning |
| Retroactive interference | New information disrupts old learning recall |
| Retrograde amnesia | Inability to remember information from the past |
| Anterograde amnesia | Inability to form new memories |
| Flashbulb memories | Emotionally intense, significant, clear memories of moments/events that feel vivid |
| LTP (long-term potentiation) | An increase in a nerve cell's firing potential after brief, rapid stimulation. LTP is a neural basis for learning and memory. |
| Iconic memory | Picture-image memory of a scene |
| Echoic memory | Sensory memory of sounds |
| Implicit memory | Retention of learned skills or classically conditioned associations, without conscious awareness. Formed via automatic processing |
| Explicit memory | Retention of facts and personal events that can be consciously retrieved |
