Memory

QuestionAnswer
Encoding The process of getting information into the memory system
Storage The process of retaining encoded information over time
Sensory memory Immediate, very brief recording of sensory information in the memory system
Working memory Conscious, active processing of both (1) incoming sensory information and (2) information retrieved from long term memory
Long-term memory Relatively permanent and limitless archive in the memory system. Includes knowledge, skills, and experiences.
Spacing effect The tendency for distributed study/practice to yield better long-term retention than is achieved through massed study/practice.
Mnemonics Memory aid, especially techniques that use vivid imagery and organizational devices
Priming The (often unconscious) activation of particular associations in memory
Proactive interference Old information disrupts new learning
Retroactive interference New information disrupts old learning recall
Retrograde amnesia Inability to remember information from the past
Anterograde amnesia Inability to form new memories
Flashbulb memories Emotionally intense, significant, clear memories of moments/events that feel vivid
LTP (long-term potentiation) An increase in a nerve cell's firing potential after brief, rapid stimulation. LTP is a neural basis for learning and memory.
Iconic memory Picture-image memory of a scene
Echoic memory Sensory memory of sounds
Implicit memory Retention of learned skills or classically conditioned associations, without conscious awareness. Formed via automatic processing
Explicit memory Retention of facts and personal events that can be consciously retrieved
